I was born, raised, and (mostly) educated in Texas (and in fact, I’m a University of Texas alum). Yeah, we have a lot of crazy stories coming out of Texas, like the poor behavior of the Burzynski Institute that’s recently been all over the skeptic universe. We’ve also got the Texas State Board of Education, which in recent years has infamously advocated ruining Texas education with the inclusion of creationist nonsense in our schools’ curricula and textbooks. I’m always glad to see and support people who fight back, like the National Center for Science Education, the Texas Freedom Network, and in yesterday’s paper, a group of UT professors including David Hillis, who are objecting to the Institute for Creation Research’s inclusion in a list of acceptable charities for state employees. Thanks, Professor Hillis.

That title’s actually the 404 error for this WordPress theme. ^_^ Which I thought might be appropriate.

So, the secret skeptic- unbeknownst to me at the time I acquired the URL, the URL has been used in the past. It was apparently part of blogger Andy Wibbels’ commentary and challenge of the woo fad “The Secret” and it’s magical thinking “Law of Attraction.” I certainly agree with his criticism. If you want to see more about what he wrote, check out:

So, why a secret skeptic? There are a few reasons. I want to write about some skeptical topics. Honestly, foremost is that I don’t want to hurt people’s feelings. You can legitimately be critical of me for that, but I have several friends and family members who are into some really, really out-there stuff. While I and/or my spouse talk to them about these things in person, it doesn’t always go very well, no matter how nice or respectful we try to be. I want to address these in this semi-public manner to bring attention and discussion to these topics, even if it’s just among friends.

Second, we’re atheists. Although we’re part of the local atheist community, we live in Texas and work in public institutions. I can’t go into detail, because unfortunate as it is it can be difficult to be an open atheist in Texas- especially if you’re going to talk about things publicly. I don’t think this will necessarily always be the case for us, but for now…

Third, like a lot of skeptical bloggers say, the person isn’t the most important part of this type of writing. It’s not entirely relevant. The important parts are the ideas involved.

Finally, despite all that, it’s not that big of a secret, really. :P I’m sure someone can figure out who we are with google-fu.
